Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly flew to Salzburg on Friday to meet with Erling Braut Haaland’s entourage. The Norwegian is said to have spent the day trying to convince representatives that Haaland should join United, before returning to England as his side prepare to take on Everton on Sunday.
Solskjaer was the man who helped Haaland’s club career get off and running when he managed the hotshot at Molde in his homeland.
Now he is keen on a reunion with the striker at Old Trafford, with Manchester United set to make their move when the January transfer window opens.
According to Norwegian newspaper VG, Solskjaer flew out to Salzburg early on Friday morning for a meeting with the player’s representatives.
His father Alf-Inge Haaland was among those to meet Solskjaer upon his arrival in Austria.
The report claims Solskjaer was absent from United training on Friday while he tried to help tie up a deal.
It’s thought that the United boss is looking to step up the club’s advances on the 19-year-old following strong competition from Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann admitted earlier this week that he met with Haaland in Germany to discuss a potential switch from Salzburg.
“I tried to explain to him in good English what my idea of football is. I think it went quite well,” Nagelsmann told Kicker.
“You can say relatively little after such conversations because they are usually very one-sided. You say a lot as a coach while the agent and the player mostly listen.”
Solskjaer is hoping that his strong relationship with his compatriot can help him lure Haaland to Old Trafford.
The striker has previously hailed the Baby-faced Assassin for the influence he has had on his career:
“He has had a huge impact on my life, both as a person and as a trainer.
“He won the Champions League and was an incredibly good player. He has taught me a lot.
“I have dreamed of playing for the best clubs in the world my whole life, and I especially like English football.”
Haaland has smashed in 28 goals this season and has attracted interest from Europe’s elite as he eyes his next move.
Over 40 clubs sent scouts to watch Red Bull Salzburg take on Liverpool on Tuesday night in the Champions League and Haaland endured a quiet evening, to his frustration.
Salzburg value Haaland at around £85million but there has been some suggestion he has a release clause of just £20m, which is yet to be confirmed.
United are in desperate need of a striker and Haaland fits the profile they are looking for perfectly. Not only is he young but he can play with his back to goal and also on the last man.
