Jose Mourinho is set to be given the backing of Manchester United chiefs in the January transfer window.
The United boss is expected to be handed a £100million transfer kitty to bolster his side, which has struggled in the opening quarter of the season and currently sit eighth in the table.
The Portuguese was desperate for a centre back in the summer, but executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward refused to sanction a move due to a lack of value in the market, according to the Guardian.
Mourinho will once again target the position but will also look to add a striker – with Romelu Lukaku on a barren spell for the club.
Frontman Lukaku is on a nine game drought for United, although he has netted five goals in his last four appearances for Belgium.
When asked for the reason behind why Lukaku has been dropped, Mourinho told Sky Sports: “He is playing lots of matches. He’s not just scoring goals but fundamentally not showing lots of confidence.
“Sometimes we decide the best thing for the player is not to be on the pitch, but to be protected, away from the pressure.
“And if later he comes into game he came be positive, make a difference and back into normality.
“Romelu can score lots of goals, he is under pressure because he known for that..”
As a whole side, United have only found the net 17 times in 10 Premier League appearances, although problems are worse at the other end of the pitch.
David De Gea has shipped 17 goals with an unsettled back four in front of him – with Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all proving inconsistent,
In the summer, United were linked with a long list of defenders including; Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng, Diego Godin, Toby Alderweireld, Samuel Umtiti, Raphael Varane and Yerry Mina.
They signed none of them, as midfielder Fred, reserve keeper Lee Grant and full-back Diogo Dalot were added to the squad.
The lack of transfer movements angered Mourinho, with a rift continuing into the start of the season and led to the former Chelsea manager also being relieved of his duties at Old Trafford.
