Sportsmail revealed last week that United had emerged as frontrunners to sign the speedy and exciting Welsh winger.
And talks have progressed to the point that there are now only a few minor details left to be sorted out before a package worth in the region of £10m is agreed between the clubs.
United are also on the verge of agreeing personal terms with the 21 year-old.
Brighton, who hope to appoint James’s Swansea boss Graham Potter as their new manager, Everton and Newcastle are also keen on James but United are ready to offer the most attractive transfer fee and wage offers.
James has caught United’s eye after enjoying a breakthrough season at Swansea, making 38 appearances, scoring five times and setting up 10 goals.
