Manchester United 3-2 Southampton: Andreas Pereira net a wonderful equalizer as Lukaku brace gets the victory

Romelu Lukaku scored twice as Manchester United came from behind to beat Southampton 3-2 at Old Trafford and move up to fourth place in the Premier League.

Southampton had stunned Old Trafford with a first-half lead through a Jan Valery blockbuster, but the Reds stormed back in the second half with a wonder hit from Andreas Pereira and a Lukaku strike.

It was a sizzling opening by United that promised an avalanche of goals for the afternoon. Within five minutes, we had three dangerous opportunities but, on each occasion, discovered that Saints goalkeeper Gunn looked like he was in the mood for one of those matches at Old Trafford that frustrates United.

After three minutes, Lukaku who’d bagged two in the 3-1 win at Crystal Palace, drilled a left-foot shot heading for the bottom corner of Gunn’s net. But the keeper stretched out an arm and got contact with his glove to steer the ball away for a corner.

Lukaku took his tally to four goals in a week, with his 88th-minute effort in this match enough to see off Saints in a thrilling contest.

Yan Valery opened the scoring with his first senior goal for Southampton, a spectacular long shot, but early second-half strikes from Andreas Pereira and Lukaku gave Man Utd the advantage.

James Ward-Prowse’s 75th-minute free-kick drew the visitors level.

However, his fifth goal in eight matches was not enough as United struck again through Lukaku and the hosts might have scored a fourth had Angus Gunn not saved Paul Pogba’s stoppage-time penalty.

Saints remain fourth from bottom with 27 points from 29 matches played, while United’s 11th PL win under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer moves them on to 58 points.
