Jose Mourinho inadvertently paid Ashley Young a huge compliment, confusing him with former Chelsea and England stalwart Ashley Cole.
The Manchester United manager slipped up in a post-match interview following his side’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth.
He said: ‘In theory they say “1-1 you bring on Herrera”, I brought on Herrera and Ashley Cole started attacking more, Luke Shaw started attacking more, Paul Pogba had more freedom, the team started recovering balls higher. And then we became more offensive.’
Having worked with Cole at Chelsea during both of his stints as manager at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho can be forgiven for confusing the Ashleys.
Cole thrived under Mourinho, winning the Premier League and FA Cup and became an integral part of the team.
Perhaps Young, a former winger transformed into a defender, would like to think the mix-up was over his performance on the pitch rather than shared first name.
The 33-year-old started at right back for United on their trip to the south coast.
He played the full 90 minutes as Mourinho’s side fought back from Callum Wilson’s opener to equalise through Anthony Martial before Marcus Rashford slotted the winner in injury time.
The victory backed up a win at home against Everton and leads United in nicely to their Champions League clash with Juventus on Wednesday.
