Romelu Lukaku has completed an €80m million move to Inter from Manchester United, putting an end to a summer saga that sees the striker join forces with long-time admirer Antonio Conte. The 26-year-old has signed a 5-year contract with the Italian club and will cost a fee of around £60 million, which can rise by a further £9-12 million, according to Italian media reports. Lukaku surpasses Christian Vieri, who joined the Nerazzurri for almost £42 million in 1999, as Inter’s record signing. Even if only the initial fee will be paid for the Belgian, he becomes the striker who has accumulated the highest transfer fees with all his moves. Chelsea paid £13.5 million for the forward in 2011, while Everton spent about £35 million including a loan fee. The highest fee paid for Lukaku was the £76.2 million Manchester United sent to the Toffees in 2017, however, which means the Red Devils now make a loss on the player. He is set to earn about €8.5 million a year at Inter and benefits from a new law in Italy, saying that players who come from abroad have to pay fewer taxes. Despite a contract till 2022, Lukaku looked to be at the point of no return with United, whose manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was understandably annoyed to see the striker’s Twitter video showing internal data of United players’ maximum speed in training. Eyebrows were also raised on Monday when the striker was pictured training with boyhood club Anderlecht. Inter boss Antonio Conte has been pushing to bring the Belgium striker to San Siro for some time and finally secured his first-choice target.
